What to Expect

The examination and treatments available at the Concussion Center of Massachusetts are based on functional neurology, a discipline that builds on clinical neuroscience and uses specific strategies to help improve or re-establish optimal neurological processes. For individuals who are dealing with a sports related concussion, the board certified chiropractic functional neurologist can provide carefully determined, safe, and appropriate care to improve function and monitor return to play/school/work activities.

The comprehensive evaluation process at the Concussion Center of Massachusets will provide the doctor with the information needed to make health care recommendations. You will get a full review of findings and you and the doctor will discuss your clinical presentation to decide whether you are a candidate for care.

If you are accepted for care, the doctor will discuss the type of treatment, frequency of visits, and necessary home base therapeutic exercise to ensure comfort with your individualized program and the best outcomes.

Following your initial evaluation, the doctor will prepare your review of findings. Based on the assessment findings, your doctor will create an individualized treatment plan that will address your specific recovery challenges. During your review of findings appointment, the doctor will also discuss if additional testing is recommended or if co-management is needed (with your other health care providers).

This will depend on the nature of your injury and the treatment plan that will guide your recovery.

Prior to your scheduled appointment, you will be sent paperwork to complete where you will have the opportunity to describe your injury, symptoms, prior treatments, and medical history. We request this information in advance so the doctor has time to review your case and prepare for your comprehensive testing.

At your first visit, you’ll have further opportunity to discuss your condition with the doctor during an expanded review of your intake paperwork. Diagnostic testing will be performed with advanced technology that allows assessment of balance and oculomotor (eye tracking) function. The doctor will conduct a thorough neurological, orthopedic, and structural exam to assess overall function.

Your review of findings will be scheduled within a week of the initial visit to discuss your case and treatment options.

Although many of our patients are referred to our Center by other health care providers, we do not require a professional referral. If you have a sports related concussion and have not been recovering as expected, please feel free to contact our Practice Administrator for more information regarding our office. You are welcome to schedule a free 15-minute phone consultation with one of our doctors to learn more about our therapy options and determine if you are a candidate for care.

Absolutely. Our goal is to help all of our patients return to their lives as safely and quickly as possible.  To this end, we use established, research-based assessment protocols to inform our decisions in determining your readiness to return to sport, school, work or other activities.

We strive to be a community resource for individuals suffering from sports related concussion injury. Our Practice Administrator is available to answer practical questions about our program and therapeutic services. Additionally, if you would like to speak with the doctor, you may schedule a free 15-minute phone consultation with one of the doctors to learn more about our expertise and experience with managing sports related concussion recovery. Please note that this is an opportunity to get to know the doctor. He/she is not able to make a diagnosis or treatment recommendations based on a phone consult. A formal intake and examination will be needed to further evaluate your unique case.
